The goals of the homeowner were simple...create a connection to the site and views, and create a place to relax, vacate and entertain. The juxtaposition of the modern “box” addition to the simple gabled roof structure solved a request to have more volume and a more expressive indoor/outdoor feel for the home. All rooms of the main house were oriented to enjoy ocean views while the guest house enjoys views of the ocean and the mountains behind it.

Santa Barbara's AB Design Studio was tasked with remodelling and enlarging a 1954 house that was in disrepair, including a subpar foundation made of stone rubble. From designing surf resorts in Costa Rica to master plans in Michigan, they take care in working with local councils, organizations, and leaders to create ecosystems that benefit the environment. We are hiring Interior Designers to work on Hospitality, Commercial and Residential Design projects in our studios located in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. The designer position provides essential design and/or technical support for the professional staff and typically assists in the preparation and updating of project deliverables. Roles and responsibilities for the candidate can include product research, concept design development, documentation, drawing, sketching, material board fabrication and general administrative tasks for the professional staff and the interior design studio within AB design firm. AB design studio designers gain valuable experience on fast paced projects in a creative and dynamic professional award winning studio.

It is sometimes preferable to reserve student internships for Student Interns who are currently completing the final two years of their degree or graduate degree programs in order to ensure that the prerequisite skill sets and context needed to gain the full value and experience offered from a 2-3 month internship. Longer term Student internships may also be considered and may provide the insight needed preceding a students decision to enter into a Design ar Architectural degree program. Whatever the case may be, it is AB design studio’s distinct pleasure and responsibility to nurture the next generation of Designers and Architects and as such Student internships are encouraged and a part of the AB design studio culture and experience.
Founding Partners, Josh Blumer and Clay Aurell are the founders and Source of AB design studio’s Collaborative, Creative and Accountable design, and project delivery process. Along with the other Principals in the Studio, Clay Aurell, and Josh Blumer lead the Design and Project Delivery Process. The Architect team worked with the Client to create stepped pathways, outdoor dining enclaves and play areas within a central garden courtyard that connects the home to a new pool and guest house. The guest home addition includes expansive decks that connect to the pool area and increase the livability of the home and property. Instead of adding more living space to the main house, the guest house serves as additional living space and bedrooms for their use.
As a multi-disciplinary firm, AB design studio embraces many voices, delivering projects that go beyond any singular stylistic expression. By encouraging an openness to new ideas, the collaborative studio process—inclusive of staff, partners, and clients—allows projects to independently evolve, embedding deeper meaning into each end result. While the home's original architect is unknown, there are rumours it was designed by Lutah Maria Riggs – the first female architect in California to be named a fellow of the AIA. In the 1950s, Riggs designed a nearby temple for the Vendanta Society, which drew many bohemians to the area. Plush sofas and cushions beckoned leisure, while woven textures, like beachside breezes, contributed tactile warmth. The true magic lay in the seamless synergy achieved—a space where boundaries between indoors and outdoors vanished.
Candidates shall submit a Selected Works Portfolio along with a Professional Resume & Reference List. Candidates with qualitative and relevant experience will be given priority consideration. The site work, swimming pool and new landscaping were completed in a delicate balancing act with careful respect to the existing vegetation, rock formations and oak trees that predominate the site.
AB design studio is a diverse group of architects, designers and builders who believe in the opportunity to make a difference through design. A classic modernist cabin from the 1950’s was transformed into a soulful retreat for an Interior Designer and her family. The original home, designed by famed Santa Barbara architect Lutah Maria Riggs, was a 2-bedroom, 1 bath home that was expanded and remodeled from foundation to roof. The result is a 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath main residence and 2-bedroom, 1 bath guest house each equipped with relaxing and inviting living spaces for the Owners and their guests to enjoy.
